under-construction 1-gigawatt Dundonnell wind farm in Victoria.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"_5hPQS\"><p>We see a pipeline of around 30 gigawatts of renewable energy projects seeking investment over the coming years, that are worth around $30 billion to $40 billion<\/p>\n<p><cite>EY&#8217;s Matt Rennie<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Mr Ward said even as some lenders are reducing their risk by deleveraging deals, borrowers are more confident in renewable generation&#8217;s future returns.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_1lC_G\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"_1665V undefined\">\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re seeing increasing levels of aggression and these groups taking more risks to get these projects forward,\u201d Mr Ward said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re seeing more people taking on merchant risk and construction risk.<\/p>\n<p data-gtm-vis-total-visible-time-6236702_632=\"1200\" data-gtm-vis-first-on-screen-6236702_632=\"92912\">\u201cThey\u2019re pricing this risk into the market.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mr Ward said this is being supported by more buyers of renewable power, including corporates and state governments, through programs such as Victoria&#8217;s VRET and Queensland&#8217;s Powering Queensland initiative, which aim to boost renewable generation in these states.<\/p>\n<p>He said this willingness to increase risk exposure played a role in the recent collapse of engineering group RCR Tomlinson.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_1lC_G\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"_1665V undefined\">\n<p>RCR went into administration with debts of nearly $630 million after it left itself overexposed to solar farm projects that took longer to complete than contracted, forcing RCR to absorb the higher cost overruns.<\/p>\n<h3>A power pipeline<\/h3>\n<p>The Clean Energy Council said in 2018 alone there was more than $20 billion in investment across 83 renewable energy projects.<\/p>\n<p data-gtm-vis-total-visible-time-6236702_632=\"2000\" data-gtm-vis-first-on-screen-6236702_632=\"93207\">Rystad Energy&#8217;s Australian head Gero Farrugio said 2018 was Australia&#8217;s first &#8216;gigawatt year&#8217;, and 2019 will eclipse it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There were nearly 30GW of new solar, wind and storage projects added to the pipeline in 2018, over half of these were in NSW,&#8221; Mr Farrugio said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_1lC_G\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"_1665V undefined\">\n<p>&#8220;This averaged more than 2GW per month; up to 70 per cent were from overseas investors. Clearly, the appetite from overseas is strong and policy is not driving this interest.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>EY global transaction analyst Matt Rennie said even in the wake of RCR&#8217;s collapse the investment pipeline remains strong in 2019 and beyond.<\/p>\n<p data-gtm-vis-total-visible-time-6236702_632=\"2100\" data-gtm-vis-first-on-screen-6236702_632=\"93705\">&#8220;We see a pipeline of around 30 gigawatts of renewable energy projects seeking investment over the coming years, that are worth around $30 billion to $40 billion,&#8221; Mr Rennie said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Of those, around $15 billion to $20 billion will be going ahead to a financial close in the next 15 to 20 years, on top of finance already committed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_1665V undefined\">\n<p>KPMG&#8217;s global head of power and utilities Ted Surette added, &#8220;Australia is still attractive for renewables investment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We had a tsunami of investment in 2018, it will be bigger still in 2019.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-gtm-vis-total-visible-time-6236702_632=\"2500\" data-gtm-vis-first-on-screen-6236702_632=\"93734\">The Clean Energy Finance Corporation, the government&#8217;s renewable financing arm, has also committed more than $2 billion to support greener energy and sees growing demand from investors for wind and solar investments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstitutional investors are expressing an increasing appetite for environmentally responsible investment opportunities, alongside heightened scrutiny on the climate risk issues within their portfolios,&#8221; CEFC Equity lead Rory Lonergan said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s critical that we increase the amount of finance available for large-scale renewable energy projects, especially at the early stage of development. These projects require a strong capital base and a long-term commitment to investment returns, making them ideally suited to institutional investors.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_1665V undefined\">\n<h3>Businesses going green<\/h3>\n<p>Corporates are also supporting this boom, as they invest and underwrite more renewable generation.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Ward said the rise of power purchase agreements or &#8216;offtake&#8217; agreements- companies buying power to be generated from yet to be built wind and solar farms &#8211; have been used instead to support the construction of these projects.<\/p>\n<p data-gtm-vis-total-visible-time-6236702_632=\"4000\" data-gtm-vis-first-on-screen-6236702_632=\"94294\" data-gtm-vis-has-fired-6236702_632=\"1\">Globally, companies bought twice as much renewable energy through PPAs in 2018 as they did in 2017, with Facebook alone buying as much renewable energy as all businesses in the Asia-Pacific region. Australian businesses bought about 700 megawatts of renewable PPAs last year.<\/p>\n<p>Bloomberg New Energy Finance forecasts continued growth in PPAs, particularly in Asia Pacific where &#8220;demand still far outstrips supply&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_1lC_G\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"_1665V undefined\">\n<p>Mr Ward said even with these risks the transition away from coal-fired power to more wind, solar and hydro generation is inevitable, and investors are looking to secure a stake in this.<\/p>\n<div class=\"Nl1fN AkZ3C\">\n<div id=\"ig-6129c95a-32d6-020d-0606-36023052f195\" class=\"infogram-embed\" data-type=\"interactive\" data-id=\"overall-growth-in-generation-2014-2018-1h7g6k5novve6oy?live\" data-processed=\"1\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/e.infogr.am\/overall-growth-in-generation-2014-2018-1h7g6k5novve6oy?live?src=embed#async_embed\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>This transition was supported by energy giant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/business\/the-economy\/renewables-will-be-the-main-source-of-global-energy-by-2040-bp-says-20190215-p50xzs.html\" data-track-relatedarticle=\"inarticlelink\">BP\u2019s research which said renewables will be the main source of global energy by 2040<\/a>, supported by rapid investment in new wind and solar farms.<\/p>\n<p data-gtm-vis-total-visible-time-6236702_632=\"4000\" data-gtm-vis-first-on-screen-6236702_632=\"109500\" data-gtm-vis-has-fired-6236702_632=\"1\" data-gtm-vis-recent-on-screen-6236702_632=\"109500\">Renewable generation has now reached its highest levels of penetration in Australia since the 1970s, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/business\/the-economy\/renewables-reach-highest-share-of-australia-s-power-in-40-years-20190206-p50w1f.html\" data-track-relatedarticle=\"inarticlelink\">accounting for 21 per cent of all generation in 2018<\/a>.
